The 72nd Locarno Film Festival

This month the 72nd annual Locarno Film Festival took place in Switzerland and Team Dover Street were lucky enough to attend and discover the films we’ll all be talking about in the next year.

As we arrived in Locarno not only were we greeted by the sunshine but we were embraced by a city buzzing with atmosphere – the festival had drawn in a crowd of movie fanatics, excited by seeing the latest premieres. Every corner of Locarno was full of fans, creatives and industry professionals, but what was interesting about this crowd was the average age.

While Locarno embraces its status as one of the world’s oldest film festivals, giving it an authority in the industry, it also prides itself on giving younger talent the ability to showcase their work. This year’s line up alone had 22 debut features.

In total 293 films were showcased during the two weeks of the festival; every night a crowd of up to 8,000 would gather in the famous Piazza Grande, complementing the other key locations that played host to the festival’s programme.

Team Dover Street were lucky enough to catch a few of the films on display, including Likemeback, the second feature film by Leonardo Guerra Seràgnoli. The movie critiques our use of social media and how it affects our perception of the world around us. Read Leonardo’s interview with Variety here.

Overall, the Festival was a fantastic experience. As filmmakers ourselves, it’s always fascinating to see how others are interpreting the medium of cinema.

The Festival recently announced the appointment of Lili Hinstin as its new Artisitic Director as former Director Carlo Chatrian moves onto the Berlinale, it will be interesting to see how Locarno continues to evolve and adapt to a changing entertainment landscape. Whatever the case, we know we will be there again next year!
